The History

The city of Malaga, always open to travelers and anyone who wants to live there, was once a walled city. This wall that surrounded the city had several entry/exit doors. One of them is the so-called Puerta de San Buenaventura that existed until 1879. It was the closest one to Puerta de Granada. In the earthquakes of 1884, part of the facade of the church of Aurora del Espíritu Santo, located next to the aforementioned door, was ruined, which helped widen Calle Álamos and Plaza del Teatro. Calle Álamos served precisely to unite the exterior side of Puerta de Granada and Puerta de San Buenaventura, next to which a Market was to be set up, that in the end was not done. During the Christian siege, it was closed and boarded up by the Arabs. The Christians called it San Buenaventura, after an image of this saint who, along with another of the Virgin of Angels, was placed there. Its entrance arch was a horseshoe set in a square, which the Arabs called "silk", and there was another one that supported a small spherical vault, on which a chamber was raised, and a third arch that gave rise to what, In time, would become the Plaza del Teatro. To recover the gap, which existed along the whole wall, there was a bridge in front of the door. This door was used a lot, not only as an exit door to the free market, but also because it facilitated the passage to many homes that were built in the suburbs of that side of the city. In the eighteenth century, this was a source of public use. By 1723, permission was granted to build extentions to the Door. It was this arch detaching from the doors and accessories, little by little, that led to 1875 when the remodeling and modernization of the city of Malaga made it disappear, to this day.

In the place of the former Puerta de San Buenaventura in the city of Malaga, the former Convento de San Pedro de Alcántara was erected at the end of the XVII century until today. After its definitive demolition, the Larios family allowed most of the lot to be rebuilt. Finally, Diego Clavero carried out the design of two buildings separated by a street that would connect the squares of San Pedro de Alcántara and that of Teatro. The denomination of this space was due to the fact that just in front of the buildings to which we refer today existed a theater known as "Teatro Comico Principal", whose work dates back to 1793 and remained standing until the twentieth century despite being converted into a cinema theater.

The two buildings to which we refer were one of the best examples of classical architecture in our city. Both constructions present in their façades a series of singular characteristics such as: the alternation of curved and triangular frontons, cotinuous balconies, pilasters and balustrades, among other elements that generated a space of great monumentality.

The Project
